Avon and Wilts PPI Mental Health Forum Area

General Introduction

The Forums will play a vital role in making sure patients’ and the public’s views are heard and acted on by all those involved in making decisions. The functions of the Forums have been laid down by law; this means they will have real power to make a difference, not just discussion groups.

The members of the Forum are made up of users, carers and people with and interest in or experience of mental health problems who are committed to ensuring the service improves in a way that is responsive and beneficial to its users.  We have agreed to hold bi-monthly meetings in public, the first half of the meeting covering any formal business that we may need to conduct, and the second half being open to the floor for members of the public to make their views heard.  We also hold informal planning meetings on the alternate month.  As a statutory body we do have to deal with a fair amount of bureaucracy, but at public meetings we try to keep that to a minimum.  The trust area is very large and we are trying to hold our public meetings at different venues around the area so that at least once a year our public meeting should be held close to your home.  We are very happy to come and talk to your group about our work and to hear your views.

The size of the area and the financial challenges currently faced by AWP mean that we are struggling to get on top of our brief and we desperately need more members to be effective.  If you are at all interested please to contact us for more information.  Our main priority for this year is to ensure that the reconfiguration of AWP services is responsive to user needs and aspirations and does not result in a diminution or deterioration of services.
